Isaiah 6:8 NLT Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”
Newly Born Believer Lesson – Holy Communion
There are four approaches to observe holy communion for baptized Christians. Please review.
God instituted Grace, Ask for More
But, before you partake in Holy Communion with Christ, STOP! Present yourself as worthy to be in God’s presence by asking for and receiving the grace cleansing of your sin, creation of a pure heart within you, and the strengthening of your spirit.
Psalm 51:2 “Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Jesus instituted communion on the night he was betrayed. He used bread and wine for the holy meal. We partake in this meal to freely receive the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 26:26-28 NLT “As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”
And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.”
“Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.””
Lesson Questions: Is the bread and wine useful for the forgiveness of sin without being blessed? What is meant by “with you in my father‘s kingdom”?
Paul builds on Jesus’ version, telling us that it is a meal of unity, whereby all Christians are united as one church.
1 Corinthians 10:16-17 NLT “When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ? And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body.”
Lesson Question: What do all baptized believers sharing the bread and the wine in the same way bring about?
Paul preachers about a memorial meal, during which, we partake until the Lord comes again to judge the living in the dead.
1 Corinthians 11:23-32 NLT “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.”
For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.
That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died. But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.”
Lesson Questions: Why should you examine yourself before eating and drinking of the cup?
Jesus also proclaimed that when we receive his flesh and blood in holy communion, we receive eternal life, and that we abide in him, and he abides in us.
John 6:53-58 NLT “So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.””
Lesson Questions: Does this communion come with a promise? Can we remain in Jesus and he remain in us?
